Once again a Song of the Day that’s a song from today, more or less; there is actual musical life out there on the pop charts. And Something Just Like This isn’t just pop, it’s particularly poppy pop featuring teen sentiment and minimal structure; but hey, it’s a pretty tune and it’s got a beat, you could dance to it. It’s a collaboration between Coldplay and The Chainsmokers, and I don’t know the first thing about either of them.

I mean, we’ve been hearing Coldplay on the radio pretty regularly since the turn of the century, but none of those songs ever made me want to turn it up. The Chainsmokers come out of the EDM scene, for which I have absolutely no sympathy, but as a result of writing this I’ve run across a couple of other really attractive tunes from them; maybe I’ll become a fan.

Something Just Like This

This is the 112th in the Song of the Day series (background).

Links · Spotify playlist. This tune on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify. As for live video, the song’s first-ever performance at the BRIT awards is polished and energetic, with fabulous special effects. But my fave is just The Chainsmokers, who pair it with another nice tune called Paris (If we go down, we go down together, there’s a rock and roll lyric for ya) then take Something Just Like This double-extra-fast, which works well.
